Rest in Peace: Norbert Stengel TMA 1987 Board Chairman

Norbert Gregory Stengel, 90, of Northbrook, Illinois, passed away surrounded by family on October 27, 2025. A native of Germany, he was born and educated there before making his home in the United States.

Mr. Stengel was the owner of Northwestern Tool & Die and dedicated time and talent to serve fellow small and midsize manufacturers by being a part of the Technology & Manufacturing Association. During 1987, he served as the TMA Board Chairman.

Mr. Stengel had a unique passion for manufacturing, and held a deep concern for the industry’s future. While serving in TMA, he conceived of the Association’s Education Foundation, where he, with the help of fellow TMA member Gregg Panek, raised nearly $1 million in pledges. The funds were used to help schools offer relevant manufacturing training. The Education Foundation continues to promote manufacturing training in 2025.

“We are sad to hear of the passing of Norbert Stengel,” said TMA President Patrick Osborne. “It was a joy and honor in 2023 to give him a tour of our TMA Training Center, where instructors continue to use a mold from his Northwestern Tool & Die shop – 30 years later. He is an exemplary tribute to the industry, and to our Association.”

Mr. Stengel is survived by his wife Agnes Stengel; his daughter Shirley Maier (Greg); his son Mark Stengel (Amy); seven grandchildren—Brian, Sara, Jessica, Kevin, Austin, Tyler, and Mackenzie; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Robin Stengel.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 2, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at Donnellan Family Funeral Services, 10045 Skokie Boulevard, Skokie, Illinois.

A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, November 3, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 1962 Old Willow Road, Northfield, Illinois, followed by a private burial.
